20 Tips and Tricks for Android Phones

Let’s face it the Android community is growing larger by the day.  More and more people are switching from BlackBerry, Palm and even iPhone to Android because they realize the power and potential of these devices.  With so many new Android phone owners around we thought it would be great to give you a list of some handy tips to use and try out.

Listed below are 20 helpful tips and tricks for Android phones.  They are each listed with step-by-step instructions to make it as easy as possible.  If you enjoy these tips and tricks leave a comment and feel free to add your own.

Tip # 1 How to transfer music/video files between the Android Phone and PC

1.Connect the device to the computer with the USB cable

2. From the home screen, pull down the window shade (Notification bar, located at the top of the

screen

– You can also press the Menu Key on the front of your Android phone, then select Notifications

3. Select USB Connected

4. Select Mount

5. From File Explorer/Finder on the computer create a music/video folder in Removable Disk

(Removable Disk is the 16GB SD card in your phone )

– For any accompanying artwork in JPEG format, rename the art file albumart.jpg and place in

the same folder as the music files.

7. To further organize files, create a sub folder in the newly created music folder and copy

desired music files into it.

10. Disconnect the USB cable from the computer

Tip # 2 How to change the browser home/start page

1.From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the screen)

2. Touch Browser

3. Touch Menu

4. Touch More

5. Touch Settings

6. Touch Set Home Page

7. Enter the desired home page address then touch OK

Tip # 3 – Enabling / Disabling Bluetooth

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Wireless & networks.

4. Touch Bluetooth settings.

5. Touch Bluetooth.

-Bluetooth is enabled if a green check mark is present.

Tip # 4 – How to set a ringtone

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Sound & display.

4. Touch Phone ringtone.

5. Touch the desired ringtone then touch OK.

Tip # 5 – How to lock a text message:

1. From the home screen, touch messaging.

2. Open the thread (contacts name) that you want to lock.

3. Press and hold the message.

4. Select Lock message (a lock will appear next to the message if it’s locked).

5. To unlock a message press and hold on the locked message (lock will disappear).

Tip # 6 – How to bring up the quick launch of the 6 most used applications

  1. Press and hold the Home button.

Tip # 7 – How to stop running applications:

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Applications.

4. Touch Running services.

5. Touch the desired service.

6. Touch Stop.

Tip # 8 – How to Cut/Copy and Paste:

1. To cut or copy text, touch and hold the desired text field.

–Not all text fields support cut/copy.

2. Touch the desired option: Cut all Cuts all text from the field, Copy all Copies all text from the

field.

3. Touch and hold the desired target text field.

4. Touch Paste.

Tip # 9 – How to adjust the backlight:

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Sound & Display.

4. Touch Brightness.

5. Adjust brightness as desired then touch OK.

–If automatic brightness is desired, ensure Automatic brightness is checked.

Tip # 10 – How to adjust the date and time settings:

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located at the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Date & time.

4. To use network provided date & time values touch Automatic.

–Automatic date & time are enabled if a green check mark is present.

5. Touch Set date.

6. Adjust date as desired then touch Set.

7. Touch Select time zone.

8. Touch the desired time zone.

9. Touch Set time.

10. Adjust time as desired then touch Set

Tip # 11 – How to check for system updates:

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (located on the bottom of the screen).

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch About Phone.

4. Touch System updates.

5. Verify the system is up to date.

–If system is not up to date, touch Update.

Tip # 12 – How to add a phone number or email that is included in a text to your

contacts:

1. Open the email or text with the included number/email address.

2. Press and hold on the number/email address.

3. Touch Add to Contacts.

Tip # 13 – How to sync iTunes with your Android Phone:

This requires a 3rd party application which has Windows and Mac support.

1. Download and install doubleTwist.

2. Connect your Android phone to the computer using a USB cable.

3. From the home screen, pull down the window shade (Notification bar, located at the

top of the screen.

– You can also press the Menu Key on the front of your phone, then select

Notifications.

4. Select USB Connected.

5. Select Mount.

6. Launch DoubleTwist (it will launch automatically in Windows).

7. Set up your sync settings or just drag and drop media to your phone.

8. DoubleTwist will automatically convert your videos so that they play on your phone.

Tip # 14 – How to set up 1-touch dialing or messaging to a contact:

1. Go to the Home Screen.

2. Press and hold in open space.

3. Touch Shortcuts.

4. Touch Direct dial for 1-touch dialing or Direct messaging for 1-touch messaging.

Tip # 15 – How to store your voicemail password so you don’t have to enter it every

time:

1. Touch the Menu Key.

2. Touch Settings.

3. Touch Call Settings.

4. Touch Voicemail Settings.

5. Change the number to *86,,XXXX#

– each , represents a pause

– XXXX is your pin number

6. Now when you call your voicemail it will automatically enter your password for you.

Tip # 16 – How to add custom ringtones and notification sounds to your phone:

1. Connect your Droid to the computer using a USB cable.

2. From the home screen, pull down the window shade (Notification bar, located at the top of the

screen.

– You can also press the Menu Key on the front of your Droid, then select Notifications.

3. Select USB Connected.

4. Select Mount.

5. On your computer open the folder of the SD card.

6. Create this folder structure:

-Media (Top folder)

–Audio (Located inside Media folder)

—Notifications (Located inside Audio folder)

—MP3s (Located inside Audio folder)

—Ringtones (Located inside Audio folder)

—Alarms (Located inside Audio folder)

Tip # 17 – How to add custom ringtone to a contact:

1. Go to the Home Screen.

2. Touch Contacts.

3. Select the contact you want to add the ringtone to.

4. Touch the Menu Key.

5. Touch Options.

6. Touch Ringtone and select the desired ringtone.

Tip # 18 – How to set up Yahoo! IMAP email:

This does not require Yahoo! Plus Mail, the paid service of Yahoo! mail.

1. From the home screen, touch the applications tab (at the bottom of the screen)

2. Touch Email

3. Touch Manual Setup at the bottom left corner

– Select the IMAP option

4. In the incoming server settings, enter the details as follows:

Username: XXXX@yahoo.com (enter your complete yahoo email address)

Password: enter your yahoo password

IMAP Server: imap.mail.yahoo.com

Port: 143

Security Type: None

IMAP Path Prefix: leave blank

5. Touch next to continue to SMTP Server Settings and enter the details as follows:

SMTP: smtp.mobile.mail.yahoo.com

Port: 587

Security Type: None (Checkmark “required sign-in”)

Username: XXXX@yahoo.com (enter your complete yahoo email address again)

Password: enter your yahoo email password again

6. Touch Next

7. Fill out your personal information (Name etc.)

–If you are having problems be sure that Wi-Fi is OFF then try again

Tip # 19 – How to set up Hotmail POP3:

1.From the home screen, touch the applications tab (at the bottom of the screen)

2. Touch Mail

3. Touch Manual Setup at the bottom left corner

4. In the incoming server settings, enter the details as follows:

Username: XXXX@hotmail.com (enter your complete hotmail address)

Password: enter your hotmail password

POP3 server: pop3.live.com

Port: 995

Security type: SSL

5. Touch Next to continue to SMTP Server Settings and enter the details as follows:

SMTP server: smtp.live.com

Port: 587

Security type: TLS

–Check mark “Require sign-in”

Username: XXXX@hotmail.com (enter your complete hotmail address again)

Password: enter your hotmail password again

6. Touch Next

7. Fill out your personal information (Name etc.)

–If you are having problems be sure that Wi-Fi is OFF then try again

Tip # 20 – How to use your phone as a modem (tether via USB)

Required software:

USB Tether Software: http://www.junefabrics.com/android/index.php

USB Driver: Motorola USB Driver

1. Install the PDANet software from June Fabris (see above). It will install the USB driver, it not,

use the USB driver link above to install.

2. Connect your phone to the computer via the USB cable

3. Launch the PDANet software on your phone from the applications tab

4. Click on “Turn PdaNet On”

5. On your PC go to the taskbar, right click the PDANet software and select Connect
